Cheap streaming boxes and sticks that advertise free unlimited content have long been flagged for quietly turning buyers' home internet connections into proxies for outsiders. New research indicates these gadgets go further, disguising themselves as smartphones to generate fake ad clicks on machine-made websites in a large scheme targeting advertisers and retailers. Consumers who buy them may unknowingly have their home networks enrolled in fraud infrastructure.
