Researchers have uncovered a sprawling network dubbed DoppelCart, consisting of over 100,000 counterfeit online shops that impersonate legitimate retail brands. The sites are designed to harvest shoppers' payment card information along with the one-time verification codes banks send to authorize transactions. Consumers who enter details on these lookalike storefronts risk having their financial data stolen and fraudulent charges pushed through.
